Pokhara, 14 July

Rajesh Bamjan, Nepal’s first professional paragliding pilot, was recently recognized with the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award. The 4th session of the Nepal Paragliding Pilot Club in Pokhara paid tribute to Bamjan for his remarkable contributions to the advancement of adventure sports, particularly in the paragliding sector.

During the ceremony, Ganesh Bahadur Bhatrai, former member of Nepal Tourism Board and former president of Pokhara Tourism Council, Sunil Bahadur Bhatrai, president of Nepal Air Sports Organization, Bimal Adhikari, president of Nepal Paragliding Pilot Club, and other dignitaries presented the award to Bamjan.

In 1996, tourism businessman Biru Bamjan and British citizen Adam Hill initiated paragliding activities in Pokhara. Rajesh Bamjan, Biru’s son, began flying solo during that time and later progressed to tandem flying. He became proficient in paragliding and started offering commercial flights in 2000 after the establishment of Sunrise Paragliding, the first paragliding company in Nepal, founded by Adam Hill and Biru Bamjan.

Rajesh fondly recounted that his father initially contemplated commercial paragliding with Nabio Elliott, an Italian citizen, in 1992. However, upon meeting British citizen Adam in 1996, the concept truly took shape and commercial paragliding officially commenced in 2000.

Having engaged in paragliding since the age of 18, Rajesh Bamjan has been providing tourists with breathtaking aerial views of Pokhara’s majestic mountains, tranquil lakes, verdant landscapes, and bustling marketplaces.

The event also honored notable figures in the field of paragliding, including Sanobabu Sunuwar, the silver medalist in the Asian Games paragliding event in 2018, and Lakpa Chiri Sherpa, who successfully paraglided from the summit of Mount Everest in 2012, reaching sea level. Several pilots who achieved outstanding accolades in various international competitions were also recognized during the program.
