Subas Nemwang, the Vice President of CPN-UML, has tragically passed away. He was discovered unconscious in his residence’s toilet, and despite efforts by his family members to rush him to the University Teaching Hospital, he succumbed to the situation.
Subas Nemwang resided in Baluwatar. According to his family, he was found in the toilet at 1 am, and by 2 o’clock, he had been transported to the Trivi Teaching Hospital Maharajganj.
Upon arrival at the hospital, medical professionals conducted assessments of his pulse, heartbeat, and breathing, all of which showed no signs of life, leading to his official declaration of death.
The news of Nemwang’s passing prompted Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, UML President KP Sharma Oli, CPN United Samajwadi Party’s Madhav Kumar Nepal, and other prominent leaders to rush to the hospital. Nemwang’s remains will be placed at the party central office in Chasal for those who wish to pay their respects.
Nemwang, who also held the position of Chairman of the Constituent Assembly and former Speaker, had been a Member of Parliament since 2056, winning consecutive elections in Ilam. He also served as the Deputy Leader of the CPN-UML parliamentary party.
In addition to his parliamentary roles, he was a member of the National Assembly in 2048 and 2052 and served as the Minister of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs in the first communist government under Manmohan Adhikari. His prominence grew when he chaired the Public Accounts Committee and investigated the Lauda scandal after winning the 2056 election.
Nemwang’s legacy includes four terms as Speaker of the restored Parliament during the Jan Andolan in 2062-63. In both 2064 and 2070, he secured election victories in Ilam, becoming the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly each time. His commitment to public service earned him unanimous support throughout his four terms as Speaker.
