Pokhara, August 1
Bhutan Air Lines, currently operating flights between Kathmandu and Bhutan, has submitted a request for permission to initiate direct flights to Pokhara and Bhairahawa. The Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority has officially approached the Nepalese authorities seeking approval for direct commercial flights to these two additional cities in Nepal. The process to approve the designated airlines by the Bhutanese government is expected to be completed expeditiously.
Bhutan foresees significant potential in attracting Buddhist tourists through direct flights to Nepal’s new cities. Despite seven months of operation, no foreign airlines have established regular flights to Pokhara International Airport, despite various companies expressing interest in direct flights. Presently, flights to Bhutan traverse the Gulf-348 route, passing through the skies of Eastern Ilam before connecting to Pokhara via Kathmandu.
Jajira Air and Nepal Airlines Corporation of Kubet have been operating international flights at Bhairahawa International Airport, which commenced operations a year ago. With the addition of direct flights from Bhutan, it is expected that tourism and connectivity between the two nations will witness further growth and facilitation.
